Visiting India on ILR & imminent expiry of indian passpo

Hello everyone,
I have ILR and my indian passport expires in April 2012. Would like to know whether I can visit my parents in India without any problems (leaving India and entering UK) in December. Should I have a valid passport with > 6 months validity?
