I need to claim benefits but am having difficulty

Post by taniadasilva » Sat Dec 17, 2011 12:06 pm

I was born in the UK in 1991 of a British father and Portuguese mother (never married) at the time of my birth my mother had lived in the UK 3 years and was not working. I know my father did not register me as British and my mother was told I would have to take her nationality - they split up shortly after I was born. I am now pregnant and trying to claim income support and have been told I'm not entitled to it but if i provide a copy of my mothers passport, her wage slips and now they want proof that she has registered me as Portuguese but she was never advised to do this when my birth was registered at the registry office. In the past I was estranged from my mother at 15 and ended in foster care then supported housing at this time I was given income support following that whilst looking for work JSA and more recently due to problems with my pregnancy ESA. What can I do? Do I even have a nationality.

Today I've spoken to the UK border agency and I'm not British :/ and also the Portuguese consulate and they say I've not been registered as a Portuguese national so I don't exist so what the heck am I?

I think your query would be better placed in the British Citizenship section of the forum - perhaps one of the mods can move it for you?
