Need info on Child Tax Credit please

Post by imranb » Mon Jan 30, 2012 2:55 pm

Hi,

I have recently received ILR status, and have already applied for Child Benefit for my 2 children. My question is what is the criteria for claiming child tax credits? What is the threshold annual earning beyond which child tax credits are not allowed? How is the child tax credit calculated? Tried reading through the tax credits website, but that wasn’t very helpful. Any inputs would be highly appreciated.

Cheers.

I suggest that you go to this HMRC webpage, where you will see a link to their Tax Credits calculator. If you use that you will have a good idea how much you and your wife might get.

Thanks very much John. That was really very helpful. I did use the calculator, and it appears anyone earning more than £42k per annum is not eligible for this benefit. If I enter annual earning as £41k, it calculates a benefit of £27 pounds, but this becomes 0 as soon as i increase the earnings to 42k. Am I right in concluding that threshold amount? Many thanks again for all your help.

Cheers!

Given the benefit tapers away once income is past a certain point, and because people's circumstances are different, I do not think that it is possible to come up with a precise answer to your question.

However I am not at all surprised by the figures you mention.
