Indian Passort Query

Hi All,
My passport is expiring in early August. I got my ILR stamped in it. And i'm planning to go India by this May for couple of weeks. I wanted to apply for my new passport before my travel.

Can i apply for a new one even before its expiry?
If i can, is that re-issue or renewal?

You can apply upto 12 months in advance of your current passport expiry date.
