How long does it take to cancel Child benefit

Hi, does anybody know how long it takes to cancel the child benefit? I have contacted the HM revenue by phone calls about two weeks ago and was told that someone is going to call me but I'm still waiting. Anyone has similar experience or could tell me how long it actually takes before they reply and what will happen since then? I did say I would like to pay all the money back to them as well. Thanks a lot!
