VISA CHANGE From a dependent Tier 1 general

Post by magnolia33 » Fri Mar 09, 2012 1:33 pm

Hello,

Can anybody guide me?
I currently hold a valid dependent( general) tier 1 visa for 3 years.I have spent a year in uk and gave my PLAB 1 and 2.Now My registration from the general medical council is in process and i want to change my visa status to a one where i can work as a doctor?
How do i do that?
And under what visa type do i apply?
I also want to know if I get rejected ,will it affect my dependent visa status?

Can someone please urgently reply to my query. Will be really grateful.

To the best of mu knowledge, dependent visa can not be changed within UK. That will need to be applying in your home country.

With a Tier 1 Dependent visa you can work as a doctor but not as 'doctor in training' i.e. you can't join a specialist training programme leading to a CCT (completion of clinical training) certificate which would make you eligible for consultant jobs. However you can work in non training posts e.g. locum or staff grade or observer or clinical fellow etc.
To work in training posts you need Tier 2.

Thank you for the advice.
Please guide me ,even if i apply for tier one visa independently, can I then work as a doctor in training?
And another thing will my new application for visa change affect my current status as a dependent ,if the new application gets rejected?

there is no suitable category for you to apply under tier 1 as tier 1 general is closed to new applicants. Tier 2 is your best option but your employer would need to sponsor you. An unsuccesful application should not have any effect on your current dependent leave unless for example you were refused on deception grounds.

Yes, both. Can I apply directly for tier 2 sponsorship visa ? But I thought you require a sponsorship certificate to complete the points assessment for tier 2. Is this right? How do I get this certificate?

as stated earlier, you would need an employer willing to sponsor you.
