Employment after ILR - Good Character Requirement

Post by greenolive » Wed Mar 14, 2012 12:39 pm

Well, I was granted my ILR recently.
If I want to briefly describe my situation, I was dependent of my partner who was on 5year Tire2. I just finished my PhD and am an academic visitor with a university. I don’t get paid and my partner covers my living expenses.

I am going to apply for Naturalisation next year. I am worry about the question they would ask me about my employment on “Section3: Good Character Requirement” of the AN form.
My question is when they ask me “What is your occupation?” what should be my answer?
I am currently not getting paid but during my study I did get some small money on my teaching assistant. I have my NI number and the payslip of those small moneys but those were not regular. Also I did not apply for any benefit yet as I don’t want those effect my AN application.

You may advise me about the choice available for me to improve my chance for naturalisation. Thanx

Thanks for the reply.

I am still uncertain as “Section3: Good Character Requirement” of the AN form has no option for unemployed people. They are clearly asking about the occupation and taxes. Also in some topics of this website I have read that the employment status my effect the good character decision.

To get rid of this stress I have setup a company and put my name as a director. I did not start any business yet as I don’t not know how to deal with NI contribution and Tax issues.
Dos anyone have any experience about this?

If in Section 3.2 of the AN form check I am “A Director” then how I should answer to “Section 3.5: Address of tax office or tax office reference”? Thanx

So to be stress free, you are now setting up a business which means that you will need to make sure that all taxes and contributions are paid according to the law or you might fail the Good Character requirement. Doesn't sound very logical to me.

Each year, thousands of unemployed people are granted BC without setting up a business just to meet the good character criteria.

Good luck with your business.
