Applied for residence permit in Sweden

Post by MuckDuck » Mon Mar 26, 2012 7:06 am

Hello,

I'm a US citizen and my boyfriend (who I've known for two years) and I got married in Stockholm in August 2011. He is a citizen of Sweden. When I returned to the states after my three month visit over the summer I applied for my residence permit. I didn't have to go in for an interview, which was nice. The lady at the embassy in DC who forwarded my application to Migrationsverket said it was because we were married.

My application was received at the Swedish migration board on October 18, 2011, about two weeks after I sent it to the embassy in DC. We call the migration board about every other week and we still don't have a case officer. The only information we can ever get out of them them is that it will take seven to nine months to reach a decision. April 18, which is around the corner, will mark six months since they received the application and we still haven't heard anything from them.

What I'm wondering is how long people who have recently received a decision in a similar case had to wait. I realize they're overloaded with applications and it's taking a long time but this is torture. I visit my husband for the max amount of time allowed with my passport. I visited him again for winter and returned in February and leaving was so hard, I don't want to have to do it anymore. I was pretty catatonic my first month back in the states. I'm really hoping I'll be approved by May, since I can't be in Sweden after he has his interview and they're making a decision. I'd really like to be able to stay with my husband permanently next time I see him.

I'm also curious what questions they'll ask when my husband is called for an interview. He has a bad memory and he's really nervous he won't be able to remember what toothpaste I use or something. I'm hoping it's not that severe.

I'm also hoping this post will provide other people with some information on current time frames. I know I wish more people had posted their experiences.

Thanks!

Hi, I'm not sure how much information you would get from people here about Swedish residence permits under their immigration laws. Maybe I'm wrong and someone will be able to give you some information. Best of luck and hang in there.
