Speeding up passport applications

I was wondering if there are any tips or tricks to speed up the application for a British Passport?

We want to book a holiday but not sure what name to use as the british passport will be in married name but the current passport in maiden name. Would prefer to book in married name (had questions already going to the middle east about our names being different but sharing a room etc) and it should be here with a couple of weeks to spare but the holiday people say that its a fair amount more to have the flexibility to change the name.

Don't think there is a way if it is your first British passport?

When do you plan to apply for a passport? Getting the passport in less than 3 weeks might be tricky.
