Surrender of Indian passport

Post by n_abhi_s » Wed Apr 04, 2012 6:14 pm

Hi,
I have recently become british citizen through naturalisation, and application for british passport pending, would take another 2 weeks or so. In the meantime, I wanted to utilize next 2 weeks to get my Indian passport surrendered to VFS. However, on vfs website, the document checklist http://in.vfsglobal.co.uk/surrender_checklist.html needs
Self attested photocopy of British / Foreign Passport, I am not too sure why this is needed as naturalisation letter itself is proof of british citizenship.

There may be case, when foreign citizen get naturalised in Britain and do not apply for british passport as passport is only required for travel, and not a mandatory document for citizen of any country.

Any idea about this, whether anyone applied for surrender of Indian passport without providing copy of foreign passport.

Many Thanks.

You have to provide a copy of your British Passport when you apply for a surrender certificate. There is no short-cut or exception to that. So wait till you get your British Passport before you apply for your surrender certificate.

Thanks krazydude, strange are the ways here at Indian embassy, I could not understand logic behind requirement of British passport for surrender of Indian passport, in my opinion, naturalisation letter should be enough as that's the proof of acquiring british nationality, as after becoming British, decision to travel overseas and of that matter, getting British passport has no bearing on surrendering Indian passport.

Agree with your logic, however that logic is not followed by the HCI or Indian authorities and since they are the ones who issue OCI, one has to play by their rules.
