Waiting for visa decision

Can I remain in the UK if my current visa expires while waiting for a decision on my new visa?
I won't be able to send my application in until the end of august because I am needing my passport for a holiday. My current tier 2 visa expires the first of october. Can I remain in the UK waiting for my extension visa when my current visa has expired?
