Hi Guys

My professional referee is a Haematologist; her official job title is "Biomedical Scientist" and works for the NHS.

Her job title is not listed on the list of acceptable professions, but I'd say it's a person of professional standing.

Do you guys think the HO will accept this referee?

I think so that will be acceptable, as Biomedical Scientist is professional title issued by The Institute of Biomedical Science and they work for NHS.

Yes they're a doctor thus would be accepted.

I thought she would be a good referee, because she also had to pass a test to register with a public body, which was a requirement by the NHS, so I guess this qualification to register with the public body is her professional qualification.

I was a bit concerned because it wasn't on the list; although, the HO said it's not exhaustive.

The fact she is a dr is alone indicative that she's a person of good standing in the community.

You stated she was a Haematologist which is a medical doctor. If she's not a Dr then she may not be a 'professional' for the purpose of a referee. However, it would depend if she is a member of a professional body.

Biomedical Scientist are not doctors, they are Microbiologist, Pathologist, Haemetologist, Histologist, Blood Transfusion specialists etc, people who do all kind of blood, tissue, organ, body fluids tests. They hold either bachelor or masters degree in their respective field and are member of Institute of Biomedical Science. This institute is a professional accreditation body to issues the title of Biomedical Scientist.
On the list of professional referee all other people like simple bank staff or mortgage advisor are listed so I presume Biomedical Scientist is acceptable because it has far more rigorous process to get the title and is thru a professional body. Referee list is not exhaustive.

I was going to get one from my wife's collegue but then she could only sign for my wife and not for me so we dropped the idea.

Yes, she is a Haematologist, she analyses blood samples that she gets from GPs among other tasks; although, the official job title is Biomedical Scientist; I'm not an expert in medicine, but I think Biomedical Scientist is the general title and Heamatologist is the speciality.

She has a university degree and a master's and when she got the job, she had to attend a university course to obtain an extra qualification which was required by a public body in order to register with them, registration with this public body was a requirement for the job, at the NHS

So she's registered with a public body, which I suppose is a professional body, because they register NHS scientists.

Neoseal, it's exactly the way you explain it; except that I don't know the name of the body; it's a requirement have that job at the NHS, she had to register with them, although, she didn't tell me the name of the body.

I've just called my friend and she said she had to register with the Health Professions Council (HPC); does that make her a professional?

Yes, completely forgot to mention HPC. To practice as BMS, HPC registration is a must.

Both haematologists and pathologists are medical doctors. If you're a haetamotology technician or pathology technician that's totally different. If the person is registered with a professional body then it's likely to be accepted as a professional.

I've called her and she told me she's registered with the Health Professions Council which is a regulator for a few professions and Biomedical Scientist is one of them

I guess a health professions regulator is considered a professional body, so hopefully, they'll accept it.

If not, I have a civil servant, if they contact me asking for a third one; I was going to include it in the application too, but the NCS told me to send only 2 and took this one out, but if they write to me asking for a third one, I can send the civil servant; the problem would be if they didn't ask and refused it straight away, hopefully not.
