Sections 1.2 & 5 on Form AN and supporting documents

Post by lcb26 » Thu Jan 24, 2008 12:29 am

Hi, everyone. Hope you are all doing alright, and maybe you can help me.

Having passed my "Life in the UK" test yesterday, I am now at the stage of filling out my application form AN, and maybe I am incredibly daft or the guide is deliberately vague, but I'm looking for some clarification.

Here's my (straightforward) situation: European Union citizen, first arrival in the UK on 15/10/2001, started working on 16/10/2001, and have been in employment ever since (with two short breaks between jobs of about 6 weeks each, in which I didn't leave the United Kingdom).

First question: Section 1.2 asks when I was given indefinite leave to remain, and advises EEA nationals to refer to page 5 of the guide. Page 5, in turn, says that EEA nationals gain automatic permanent resident status after exercising EEA free movement rights for 5 years and don't need to apply for IRL. So then... what do I put into 1.2? 15/10/2006? 16/10/2006? Nothing? Do I actually have permanent resident status or does changing the jobs "reset" the clock?

Secondly: Referees, referees, referees... sigh. So, my first referee is a close friend of mine, a watch repairer, proprietor and manager of his own watch repair shop; the second one is a senior associate at a medium sized investment bank in the City. Both are respectable people, but neither is in the strictest sense of the word a person of "professional standing", if I interpret the guidelines correctly...? Correct? Thing is, I honestly don't know anyone who would be a "professional" along the lines of doctor, priest, bank manager etc... (never been ill, atheist, and online banking... no run ins with the police, or social workers. my post office manager doesn't know me, etc...) Any advice?

Finally, in terms of supporting documents, I managed to dig out 4 of the last 6 years' P60s, but apparently I've mislaid the one for 2004/5 and (crucially) 2001/2 - the first year. Any idea if and where I could get replacement copies of those? Alternatively, I do still have all my payslips from the very beginning... are those an acceptable alternative? I also have something called a "coding notice" from the IRS from 12/2001 and a "statement of earnings" for the period of 10/01 to 06/02. Just the stupid P60s are missing...

Thank you so much for your help and advice.

Lars

Which EU state are you from, out of interest?

You became a Permanent Resident on 15 October 2006. Changing jobs does not reset the clock.

Referees. Can your friend in the City call himself a "banker"? And your other friend something like "businessman" or "company director" (if he runs his business through a company).

Documentation. Anything that shows you were in the U.K. starting October 2001 to mid 2002 will help. Contract of employment, bank statements, utility bills, driving licence etc.

Thanks for your reply (especially at this time of night... seems like I'm not the only one with unsociable hours ;-))

Germany, so I got ripped off by my own country for 255 Euros to obtain a "Dual Nationality Permission" just before they changed the law and and now I don't need it anymore... *sigh*

Thanks! Awesome. Exactly the kind of straightforward answer I needed.

Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines, tbh. I just wanted to check if other people have had similar issues/experiences, or if anyone knows how particular and pedantic the people who check these things are. As far as I'm aware my watch-repairing mate is member of some sort of watch-repairers "guild", but I've no idea whether this is a "professional body" in any meaningful way. I'll definitely ask them to make their occupation sound as pompous as they possibly can.

Cool. I can literally flood them with documentation. I'm at a complete loss why I can't find the P60s, as I tend to keep every last useless bit of paper. I've made an appointment with the NCS in Wandsworth for next Tuesday, so I'll probably just take all my documents with me and let them pick and mix everything they may deem useful.

Thanks again for your reply, JAJ. That was most helpful.

One of my friend is a civil engineer. Does a Civil Engineer is considered as an Engineer (with professional qualifications) given in
Home Office AnnexA List?

The confusion is don't understand what do they mean by (with professional qualifications)?
