Applying for UK passport

Hi All,
I have received my citizenship certificate and about to apply for my first UK passport. As far as I can see there are many ways to apply but all of them require that I send my original passport which could be held with them for over 2 months .
My question is: is there a way to apply for my UK passport without having to leave my other passport with them for long ?
What if I needed to travel for any emergencies during this time ? Do I have request my passport back ?

You have to submit your original passport.

Applications don't take 2 months. It is averaging around 3 weeks at the moment.
