You can travel without BRP. I've done that before, you will be stopped and have to wait for a while until they verify your details. Just bring the confirmation letter with you. Shouldn't be a problem at the airport, however, the main issue will be from the country you are departing,i.e they may ask ...

Hi, If you have even a minute chance of travelling within the 6 months period, please go for the premium as the £500 is the price for your travelling plan cancellation. The premium upgrade from postal application has been dismal so far, at least for August and September applications with no response...
