if you're talking about the ref number for tracking the application on the VFS website, that's there on the receipt given to you by VFS when you submit the application.

You don't have to worry about converting the money at the 'right exchange rate'. VFS uses the consular rate of exchange, which is currently at INR70/1GBP.
