Once you’ve got your certificate of British citizenship, you must
send your biometric residence permit back to the Home Office within 5 days of either:
- going to your citizenship ceremony,
getting your certificate of British citizenship
Cut up your biometric residence permit and put it in a windowless envelope with a note saying you’re returning your permit because you’ve become a citizen.
You’ll be fined up to £1,000 if you don’t return your permit in 5 days.
You can’t use your biometric residence permit for travel once you’ve become a British citizen. Apply for
British passport or
right of abode certificate.

Suggestion: Check at postoffice if you can send recorded delivery to Freepost PO Box. If so, send it by recorded delivery and keep proof of posting in safe custody.

Destroying the ILR
BRP seems
senseless for a parent with UK born British children under Section
1(1)(b).

It is suggested that people may make a certified copy of their BRP before sending it for destruction, this can be done in three ways:
1- the use of a solicitor or commissioner for oaths
2- the use of the Post Office document certification service or
3- ask the NCS to make a certified copy (if you are using the NCS)
This is in response to Vinny's post as he is indeed correct that some may require proof of status (or previous status) in the future.

Did you keep a copy of the BRP or a certified copy?
You might need to apply for a SAR?
I sent a certified copy which was declined saying they can only accept originals. As for why I didn't apply sooner, I didn't know beforehand of this ridiculous requirement.
Thanks a lot. I'll apply for a SAR.

Fee for a Nationality Status Letter is GBP234- and if you ask for your documents back from the Passport Office they will probably cancel the passport application and keep the fee.

A better approach- if the Passport Office refuse to accept a copy of the BRP- might be to contact your Member of Parliament and ask him or her to request from the Home Office Minister a reason why they are demanding an original of a document that someone is obliged to send back to the Home Office. (unreasonable request for documentation). The Passport Office is an agency of the Home Office and should be able to contact the Home Office to verify that the copy is true.

I think there are
provisions to
retain the ILR
BRP, if the holder is a parent of a UK citizen child born in the UK.

Notify them that
HMPO requires parent's original ILR
BRP before issuing your UK-born child's first
British passport, or when a current British passport was lost or stolen.
Moreover, a parent's ILR
confers a subsequent UK born child's British citizenship, not a British
passport.
