Child's name in birth certificate v in passport application

Post by specificus1 » Tue Jun 03, 2014 4:12 pm

Hi everyone

Wonder if anyone has been in a similar situation and can assist.

When registering my son's birth I included his patronymic in his names, as it is traditional in my country (Russia) (also so that internal Russian documents could include his patronymic, but the documents meant for external use - outside Russia - never have our patronymics anyway.... sorry it's confusing).

Now applying for British Citizenship and I would like to omit the patronymic, using only his first name (the patronymic is given after the person's father's name and does not sound very good in English).

What shall I write in the additional information section to do that? I have found that later when he changes his passport after 5 years he (well, I) can indicate he does not want to include his middle name, but if it possible to do it from the off?

Thanks in advance for any tips!

They will only issue a registration as British Citizen certificate in the same name that appears on all his official documents (birth certificate and passport). If you try and alter his name, they will ask you to provide proof.

You can do a deed poll to change his name and then submit the application with the existing official documents and the deed poll.

Thank you CR001.
I forgot to mention that the child already has his Russian passport, where the patronymic is not translated into English.
So effectively he only has his first name and surname on it. Does it make any difference?

I applied for MN1 and forgot my daughters middle name on the form. They wrote to me and asked me for proof that her name has been changed compared to what was on her birth certificate and passport, so a bit of a delay of about 2 weeks.

If his name on official documents match, then no problem. I am not familiar with Russian customs in regards to names. I would suggest applying via NCS as they could contact HO directly to ask them.

Complete the form with his name as it appears on his documents. A deed poll is not expensive and takes a couple of days, should you choose to do that.
