Proof of permission to work

Post by jimquk » Tue Aug 28, 2007 9:49 pm

Hi guys

I have an Angolan lady who was refused asylum back in 2002; as I understand things, she was granted one year "outside the rules" on account of her pregnancy. The year expired in December 2003, at which time her solicitor applied for further leave to remain. In spite of several reminders, she has never heard anything.

I have suggested to her that she not chase them up any further as by February 2010 her daughter will be seven and she may be eligible for ILR.

She is still gtting benefits, but would really like to work; her problem is that, although her original leave allowed her to work, and that continues to be valid as she applied for an extension in time, she has no proof that employers will accept that she is permitted to work.

Any suggestions please?

Yes, well, the Home Office do not reply to her requests for extension of visa, and as I have said she may be better off by now just waiting another two and a half years to qualify for ILR under the children's seven year concession, rather than pushing them for a definitive answer to her case (could be negative!).

I suppose I was wondering if anyone else has been able to get hold of some documentation that can help in this situation. She's only after a basic job, but everyone asks for something official.

She should write to the Home office, recorded delivery, asking for confirmation of her permission to work. If she gets no response, I'd go to the MP.

She should write to her local MP explaining her situation and I am sure MP will be able to speed up her application or atleast able to give her an update of where she stands with regards to her application.
