Dual Citizenship

Post by travelerzee » Wed Nov 05, 2014 10:24 pm

hi,

I have my NCS appointment on Friday. I have obtained a non-acquisition certificate allowing me to hold dual citizenship. Do I need to send the certificate I received from my country of origin with my UK naturalisation application?

I didn't have to show mine and they didn't take a copy, but I took it with me just in case.

Whoohoo! Saffas unite lol. When did u send your application in?

i am a little confused with exactly what we do with the certificate. Do we actually need to 'do' anything with it?

The non-acquisition certificate from the UK Home Office is only needed to apply for dual citizen permission from Home Affairs at the Consular department in Whitehall, which is required before you apply for naturalisation as British.

I am a bit confused that you say you have the non-acquisition document. Did you apply to Home Affairs for their permission letter thing?

What Home Affairs issues you is what you will need to be able to travel in and out of South Africa on your SA Passport as you should not enter and leave SA on a British Passport if you have not been given permission to retain SA citizenship.

So best would be to keep the SA Home Affairs document safe and travel with it.

I for example did not do that whole process, so I have been removed from the population register and my passport and ID book have been cancelled and a letter issued to say I am permitted to travel in and out of SA on my British Passport because I have the right to Permanent Residency etc.

You need to get the confirmation from the Home Office that states you're not a British Citizen. Then you take that to the SA consulate and get a retention of citizenship certificate. You must do this before you take the oath and also within 3 months of the date of the confirmation letter. You do not need any of this at the NCS appointment, the UK government does not care about your SA citizenship.

I sent mine in on the 15th September. so waiting now. I suppose we need to keep the certificate for when we need to renew or SA passports in case they need proof.

If you renew your passport outside of SA you need to provide that letter of retention and either your British passport or naturalisation certificate. See 3B.

Thanks for all the responses guys! I think I probably confused matters by not saying that I have the retention certificate from the SA consulate in London. I'll take it with tomorrow just in case NCS ask.
