English test for ILR

Can anyone clarify the info regarding English test. I have done the test before but I heard you do not need to repeat the test again since am applying for Leave to remain from spouse visa FLM and I did an English test. Can someone please clarify this for me because a friend of mine who did precious test was granted 2 years rather than ILR which confusing because I have read it on one of the link of the UKBA. Can anyone clarify please and please.

At what level of English did you do for your spouse visa?

I ask because level A1 is needed for spouse visa and for ILR you will need to do level B1.
