Overseas birth - citizenship or overseas birth certificate?

Post by richie894 » Wed Dec 17, 2014 3:27 pm

Background:
I have a baby on the way shortly and I want to get her British citizenship (in addition to her automatic US citizenship), in case in the future she wants to study/ live etc in the UK.
Father: I am British citizen and passport holder. Born and raised in the UK, moved to the USA in 2005 to work and have lived here since.
Mother: (my wife) US citizen and lived in USA whole life

Question:
I was just going to take her US birth certificate when the baby is born to the US embassy and register for an overseas (consular birth certificate). But after reading the small print see that it means nothing. It does not guarantee citizenship, I think it just makes a record of the birth with UK authorities.

So that being said, is it still worth doing? Or should I just go ahead and immediately submit a MN-1 (citizenship application) based upon the child's father (me) being British?

I do not want to spend $300+ on an overseas birth certificate if it is essentially meaningless in my case.

I would like to get some clarification on the best way route to go with this process. Thanks in advance.

Neither overeas birth certificate nor MN1 application is required - you can directly apply British passport for the child.
