Housing benefit- eligibility got a baby

Post by REKAL » Thu May 21, 2015 11:35 am

Hi Guys,

Me and my husband both on ILR since jan 2015
married
currently no jobs/ not working
got 18 months old baby
we get child tax credit/ child benefit
now my question is..we are currently living with friends, we dont pay any rent, but it is time for us to move out from our friends place.

are we eligible for council housing ? if yes? how long will it take for us to get and move into the council property.

are we eligible for private housing from a private landlord? am i eligible? if yes ? what is the procedure? how much money per month i am entitled? will the benefit office provide initial deposit to pay to landlord towards bond/rent?

it is getting very hard to live at friends house with 18 months kid , i have asked lot of questions but f any senior members can help me, i will be really helpful.

Thank you

[quote="REKAL"are we eligible for council housing ? if yes? how long will it take for us to get and move into the council property. Probably, but there are people who have been waiting for years for council housing. Best would be to contact your local council to find out.

are we eligible for private housing from a private landlord? am i eligible? if yes ? what is the procedure? how much money per month i am entitled? will the benefit office provide initial deposit to pay to landlord towards bond/rent? Anyone is eligible for private renting. You would likely struggle to find a private rental because you are both not working. Many private landlords DO NOT accept housing benefit tenants.

You would need to find out from your council about help available for a deposit. To find out how much housing benefit you might be entitled to, check on the calculator in the link below (do it as if you are British Citizen), it really is dependent on your circumstances.
