PLEASE HELP.....

i was wondering if anybody could give me some advice or info as i am having trouble finding it on the net...
a friend of mine is dating a brazilian man currently living in gran canaria (spain) the only thing is she asks him to come to enland to visit her, he says he cant and is has to stay in gran canaria for 2 years... not allowed out of country.
i think this sounds dodgy does this mean hes married? and does anyone know what reasons there might be as to why he cant leave the country? any input would be greatly recieved

thanks.. i think he is illegal, and the authorities found out and hes saying that its them keeping him there?? surely they would kick him out?
