ILE is kind of ILR applied from abroad. At one time if you'd been married for four years abroad and married to a Brit you'd be granted ILE.

Pretty sure it's gone now....

Although children under 18 born and living abroad can still apply for ILE if they wish to join their British parent(s) in the UK.

As I understand it, ILE & ILR are exactly identical (i.e. that they both give "settled" status, with the standard no more than two years outside the UK clause) and that the difference is the location of the applicant, i.e. ILE is issued to those outside the UK, while ILR is issued to those within the UK. Would my statement be a correct summary of the situation?
