I am a British citizen and my partner is from Ethiopia, we have a 5 month old baby. At the moment I live in London and he is finishing a medical degree, graduating Sept 2016 (fingers crossed!), in Ethiopia.
I could (I think) sponsor him for a spouse visa next year - I earn more than £22,500 including a PhD stipend, child tax credit and benefit and teaching (last is on rolling temp contracts) and we plan to get married in Ethiopia this easter. But my questions are:
1. would he be eligible for a Foundation Year 1 training post as a new doctor?
As he will have done less than a year as a hospital intern/ trainee, I presume he would only get provisional registration and have to start with a training post (presuming he passes the PLAB and English tests).
2. or would it be better for him to practice as a GP for a few years in Ethiopia and get the visa on his own? I guess as Tier 2, if that's not too difficult?
by which time my PhD stipend will have finished and I may or may not have a decently paid job and/ or another baby, so I potentially would not be able to sponsor him.
There are two more general worries about his medical degree: it is an accelerated course for people who already have a first degree that only started a few years ago - he will be in the first batch to graduate, which means: 1. it is not (yet?!) on the GMC-approved list of medical schools; and 2. it is less than five years (just), and it seems the GMC are changing the rules to make it 5 years minimum.
Any medical experts here who can help I would be really grateful - its so confusing!!
