Form NS - Type of nationality

Post by scamperer » Wed Mar 09, 2016 8:14 am

I was born outside the UK to a British parent. Due to not having sufficient documents to apply for a passport, I have applied for a nationality status certificate via form NS. I wasn't sure which of the 6 types of British Citizenship this rules on. Are they only checking whether I am, on the balance of probability, a British Citizen? Or could they find I'm one of the other types?

Was your parent British Born (i.e. British otherwise than descent)?

Not many documents you need to apply for a passport. What docs are you missing? Most are easy to get.

My mum was born in the UK in 1969. She passed about 15 years ago and all I have is my Australian birth certificate and her British birth certificate. I don't have her (obviously expired) British passport. I am assuming that she never renounced it. I don't think she took Australian citizenship (but I don't think that matters either way). She became estranged from her parents so I don't have any of their details and I've never met my father.

I'm guessing after 1983, since mum would have only been 14 in 1983.

 I read it as 1959.

It would seem he is British by descent.

^^ yes you are a British citizen by descent. Any children you have which are born in the UK will automatically be British citizens otherwise than by descent, however, if you have children outside of the UK (and the other parent is not a British citizen otherwise than by descent), the child will not be British.
