Surrendering Indian Passport

Post by jilpangs » Thu Mar 17, 2016 4:30 pm

Hi,

I have applied for British Citizenship and waiting for an approval. Meanwhile I have few queries.

Once we get approval letter and BC certification on Ceremony day. What is the first thing to do?
Should we apply for British Passport or First Surrender Indian Passport? Can I just apply for British passport and wait for it before I surrender my Indian passport? Do we have any specific no of days (from BC Certificate) before Indian passport to be surrendered?

Can someone give the sequence of activities one need to do from BC approval letter until OCI. If you can add some indicative time for each process it will definitely help.

You have a 90 day grace period from the date of your ceremony to surrender your India passport. You are only a British citizen once you attend your ceremony.

Thanks CR001.

So, then better to apply for British Passport after the Ceremony and once passport arrived I can initiate Indian passport Surrender (Provided this is not beyond 90 days).

When can I apply for OCI? After obtaining Surrender Certificate + British Passport?

The 90 days grace period is for traveling without incurring any penalties.

If you search this section of the forum, you will find answers on your other questions.
