Name change

Post by rbront » Fri Apr 08, 2016 3:50 pm

My question is in relation to name change.

If I want to change my name in the British passport, do I first have to change my name in my Vietnamese passport?

Or am I OK to apply for the new British passport with following docs, without having to change the current Vietnamese passport?

- Vietnamese passport with previous name.
- Name change deed poll certificate (which states old and new name).

Thanks you members

Have you applied and received approval for British citizenship already and attended your ceremony?

Yes, I have done all of those. I currently have the British Passport with old name.
Thanks CR001

You can do the deed poll and apply for a new British Passport then.

Advisable to change your foreign passport too though.

Thanks, do you think HMPO might reject to issue a new passport if I do not change my Vietnamese passport?

Also, regarding the deed poll, shall I make my own deed poll or do you think it is better to use an official form (this costs £36) and enrol it?

thank you

You should do the official one if you want official organisations to recognise it and your bank, HMRC etc etc.

I disagree. All banks and all organisations accept your own deed poll. You don't need to pay anything for name change. Search on Google for 'free deed poll', and print on good quality paper, and get signed by friends as witness.

If Vietnam doesn't allow dual-nationality, do you even need to submit Vietnamese passport at all with your application?

OP already has a British passport, so should not need to submit his foreign passport again.

Vietnam does allow dual nationality.
