Citizenship Advice Needed

Hi Modrator,

Briefly explanation, my great-grandfather born in UK then moved to South Africa for unknown reason.
Then, my grandfather born in South Africa, also my father. All this happened before 1983.

So, I need an advice here;
- What would my father citizenship type?
- Was he obtain his citizenship "by descent" or "otherwise than by descent"?

Are the information sufficient enough to ask those kind of questions?

Your father would not be British at all. Your grandfather would have been British by Descent and he cannot pass it on to his children born outside the UK. So the trail stopped with your grandfather.

Even if your father did manage to get some sort of BC, it would not help you though.

Nationality law has evolved over the years and we would need timelines, ideally dates of birth to advise you further. Also, I take it that all the grand-parents were married and that documentary proof exists of both the marriages and the births.

In a best case scenario, as the family has been away from the UK for many generations, it is possible (but not certain) that your father may have been a "British Overseas citizen"", a status that does not give the right to reside in the UK and that is not inheritable. So, in any case, you would not acquire it and even if you did, would not allow you to settle in the UK.
