British Citizenship through Naturalisation for an EU National

Post by mecheng46 » Thu Jan 03, 2019 9:16 am

Since I live and work in UK for the last few years and with all this Brexit chaos whether it happens or not I decided to become a British Citizen and get a British passport too (Dual Citizenship).

I spent some time on the forum to understand what i need to do but I am still confused and I would like to get some help to avoid wasting my time and money.

Some background:
Born in EU and I hold an EU Passport
Moved in UK for my uni studies on Sep 2009 and i graduated on Sep 2013 (Lived in student accommodation places)
Sep 2013 - Today full time employment in UK
2014 got my own house and permanent address

I would like to apply for British Citizenship/Passport if I satisfy the requirements. I am on my own and I never applied for Permanent Residence etc (not sure if i need to) so assume that I know nothing about this process.

Where do i start?

You need to apply for PR first. It is mandatory since November 2015 to submit a Document Certifying PR.

Just to add to that, make sure you apply for PR document on the basis of any 5 year period between September 2009 and January 2018, meaning including your student years.

It's much easier for you to use your last 5 years as a worker (as you can simply provide payslips or P60's as evidence instead of the more complex things they ask you for the period you were a student) but for citizenship application you need to have a confirmed PR status for the last 12 months. So if you want to apply ASAP for citizenship, do not use the new EU settlement scheme that they will launch soon and instead apply for existing Permanent Residence document using any 5 years between September 2009 and January 2018 to prove your residence.

Thanks for your reply Hioru.

Yes i will use my last 5 years to apply for citizenship (2013-2018).

As far as i understood from your last post the 1st thing i need to do before anything else is to apply for PR. Do i need to get PR, wait 12 months and then apply for BS or once i get the PR i can fill the form etc?

Thanks

It depends which 5 years you are using to prove your residence. 12 month wait begins from the end of the 5 year period:
If you use say January 2014 - January 2019, you will then need to wait 12 months before applying for citizenship.
If you for example use January 2013 - January 2018, you won't have to wait because January 2018 was already 12 months ago.
Obviously you can even use September 2009 - September 2014.

Make sense now. I am thinking January 2013-January 2018. I don’t really think it will make any difference unless you can see a problem down the line i cannot see.

In terms of the rest of the process, what else do i need to get before filling the AN form?

Do i need a Life in the UK test?

Is there a step by step checklist for a similar application like mine? I don’t really want to start the process if i am not 100% i have or i can get all the necessary documentation etc.

Can somebody make a list of all the documents/forms i have to get/fill to go through them and ensure i have everything i need?

APOLOGIES - didn't realise we are still at the PR stage ....

You should review the guidance documents: https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... en-form-an
Everyone needs LITUK and English B1 test. You will have to provide your information working back from the date of the AN application, it's not a repeat of the PR application.

You need the eea PR form. Available online. See subforum below to post about PR applications and see what members submit etc.

eea-route-applications/

Life in the UK test and English requirement is ONLY needed for citizenship in your case and not for PR.

More confused now. I am trying to keep thing simple if possible.

For the EEA (PR) form i will need the LITUk test and also an English B1 cert?

Is this the form i need to use? https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... -07-18.pdf

Can i apply online? Is it better?

It doesn’t say anything about LITUK test or English B1.

Also do i need to get my fingerprints scanning etc?

You are confusing different applications by posting PR questions in this topic in the British citizenship sub forum!! PR questions should be posted in the sub forum link I provided.

No, it is NOT required for PR as already advised.

 ok thanks.

I think i kind of know what i need to do with the PR now so i won’t raise another thread in the PR subforum unless you think there is more to it in my case and it’s worth opening a thread?

If you have no further questions on PR then fine, but please don't ask PR questions in this topic about British citizenship.
