Extension - Change of Primary Applicant

Post by Ricos » Wed Jan 23, 2019 5:34 pm

I will need to extend my Tier 2 (General) visa later this year. I am the primary applicant on the visa, with 3 dependents. After arrival, my wife obtained employment in a "shortage occupation," for which all visa fees are reduced. Her employer has expressed a willingness to sponsor our visas (they want to make sure she stays), and the immediate cost savings are tempting.

Is this transition possible as an "extension?"
Would it qualify as a visa "switch?"
Or would such a change require an entirely new application? If so, will it end up being more trouble than it's worth?

Yes it is possible but it is not an extension. You are applying for a different category visa if you change to dependent visa.
Would it qualify as a visa "switch?"
Yes, it also resets your clock for ILR to zero and a new 5 year residence period before you will qualify.
Or would such a change require an entirely new application?
Assuming you are referring to becoming dependent on Your wife's visa, yes it would be a new application as a PBS dependent.
If so, will it end up being more trouble than it's worth?
Only you can decide what is best for you. Note however that ihs fees have doubled.
