Visitor Visa before Spouse Visa?

Hi,

I am a US citizen wanting to apply for a U.K. visitor visa for 6 months, to allow time for my British husband to gather all necessary evidence and documents before applying for the spouse visa, without having to be apart.

I have seen on other posts where people plan on arriving with a visitor visa and then switching once arriving- this is not my intention.

Is this allowed? I plan on returning to the United States for several weeks after the visitor visa and before applying for the spouse visa.

On visitor visa everyone has to return back home to apply for spouse visa.
