Is it a normal practice for employers to demand to see a T2 dependant's sponsor (spouse) BRP?

No.

A Tier 2 dependents visa and BRP is valid proof of right to work. Unless the employer suspects any form of deception or f a k e documents etc. there is no reason that the main Tier 2 BRP is required for a dependent to work.

Yeah I found it very strange too. Now with the laws of data protection it is very strange
