Visitor Visa: Heart Attack before departure

Post by tonton » Mon Aug 12, 2019 12:47 am

Dear All,

Apologies for a repeat if this has been discussed already but I am desperate and have a question.

My granddad had come to visit my aunt over the summer. He was due to fly out 10.08.19 but a few hours before departure, he suffered a heart attack and has had to have a procedure done and is now under sedation waiting for some recovery. Problem is that his visa is due to expire on 13.08.19 which he will certainly not be ready to fly. He had been on a 6 month visitor's visa and I understand he cannot extend on the same status as he has used the six months that are normally given?

What would be the ideal way to go with this so that he is not out of status as we don't want this to jeopardise any future visits to see his grandkids? Is there such a thing as temporary extension to the current visa? He twas travelling with his wife on the same type of visa (Aunt and husband are British Citizens - through naturalisation).

As always, thank you for the invaluable information.

Best wishes

T

"If you’re receiving private medical treatment in the UK
You can apply to extend your visa for a further 6 months if you:
have paid for any treatment you’ve already had in the UK
can and will pay the further costs of your treatment
continue to meet the eligibility requirements
You must also get a medical practitioner or NHS consultant who’s registered in the UK to provide:
proof of arrangements for your private medical consultation or treatment
a letter saying how long your treatment is likely to take
details of the progress of your treatment, if it’s already started
"

https://www.gov.uk/standard-visitor-vis ... -your-visa

Note that in order not to compromise future visits, if your grandad doesn't have private medical insurance, all NHS charges must be paid in full.

I wish him a speedy recovery.

You have to apply before the end of his current visa. So the application for extension has to be sent today or tomorrow as his visa expires the 13th.

Also, if he used public funds for his treatment (like he is on NHS), he will never get a visitor visa in the future. Make sure everything is paid either by you or a private insurance and keep the evidence for future reference.

Speedy recovery for your father!

Free access to A&E services doesn't include any in-patient treatment following admission.

"Some services or treatments carried out in an NHS hospital are exempt from charges, so they're free to all.
: not including emergency treatment if admitted to hospital"
