Spouse of an Irish national - Stamp 1G to stamp 4

Post by stamp4boy » Wed Sep 04, 2019 7:41 pm

Hi all

I'm an Indian national on a stamp 1G that is expiring soon and have been living in Ireland for the last 3 years. I recently married my Irish partner.

Would I be able to switch to a Stamp 4 immediately if we just show up at the GNIB office with our passports, marriage certificate and residence proof?

That's what it says on the Government website but many people here have faced problems when doing so.

Any help and encouragement would be appreciated.

It’s been only half a day. There’s really no point bumping a post.
I don’t understand what you referred to “many people here have faced problems”. You only need to apply for a permission letter if you are not in Ireland, or if you are in Ireland illegally or on short stay visa.
If you have a valid permission right now, you can just go to GNIB or local Garda station to apply for a Stamp 4. However, if your Stamp 1G has expired by the time you visit the GNIB/Garda office, you would need to apply for a permission letter.

Thanks for the response.

I'm talking about this thread ireland/spouse-of-irish-national-stamp- ... 71357.html

These folks are legally in Ireland as well but they've had to go the long way around to get their stamp 4 by writing to the SOIN department and waiting for upto 12 months even though the immigration website says they have to issue it on the spot

The onus is on the applicant to prove that their marriage is genuinely. In that post, the OP was in a long distance relationship (most likely without sufficient proof of financial interdependency), therefore it would be hard to convince the immigration officer. Remember you only have one chance to get the stamp on the spot.

Well we've been together for 2 years living here in Ireland and living together currently... This should be a straightforward case. I hope so at least.
