Child born outside Uk both parents now British

Post by hsingh2 » Wed Nov 20, 2019 10:58 am

I tried searching but couldnt find the answer.

My wife and myself became British Citizen through Naturalisation in 2018 (we were originally Indian nationals)
Now, we plan to apply for British Citizenship for my son who is 10 year old and has Indefinite Leave to Remain since Aug 2015. He was born in the US and is US Citizen but living in UK with us since Aug 2010.
Do I use MN1 form for his application? If yes, do I choose the Other Option- Discretion of Home Secretary
If not, then how do I apply for British Citizenship for him.
Many thanks in advance, for your help

Do I use MN1 form for his application?
Yes. You could have applied for the child when you applied.
If yes, do I choose the Other Option- Discretion of Home Secretary
Yes.

Many thanks for a quick response. Much appreciated. I tried to fill up the form and it asked this question
"Provide details of your grandparent from whom your mother or father derived British citizenship by descent."

Given that neither of mother or father derived British citizenship by descent- should the response be I dont know the details or just provide a detail of any grandparent?

I choose the last option - "Other - apply at the discretion of the Home Secretary" because we are not British by descent (Option 2) given that we became British Citizen by naturalisation in 2018 (unless my understanding is incorrect). Below are the options

Your parent is British by descent and lived in the UK or a British Overseas territory for at least 3 years before you were born

Your parent is British by descent and you and your parents (unless they are legally separated) are now living in the UK or a British Overseas territory

You were born on or after 13 January 2010 and your parent was serving in the UK armed forces

You were adopted abroad by British citizen parents

You were born before 1 July 2006 to a British father and your parents were not married

One or both of your parents is applying for British citizenship

Other - apply at the discretion of the Home Secretary

Ignore the grandparent question. Not relevant.
