Easiest way to change to married name on Passport?

Post by CAT77 » Fri Jan 31, 2020 8:44 am

I'll try and keep this simple.

Background is that after 10 years of DLR and then ILR I have now been granted citizenship.

In 2013 I got married, and everything (bank acc, driving license, bills etc) except my South African passport was changed to my maried name.

I didnt change my passport as I was advised to keep it in maiden name while the applications for DLR then ILR were going through to prevent confusion.

I have my ceremony on 17th Feb, and wondered what the best route is to get my British passport into my married name? It seems to imply I can only apply in the name of my current passport, so should I get this and then apply for a 2nd one in married name?

Current passport must be in the name you wish to use.

Thanks, I understand this, however I am unable to change my SA passport as I have not applied to keep dual citizenship via the South African High Commision, and effectively I am no longer a SA citizen even though my SA passport is effectively still current. Its a bit of a catch 22 situation.

You won't be able to. HMPO will only issue a passport in the name that appears on your foreign passport.

You will then need to get your SA passport clipped and cancelled and likely change your name by Deed Poll and then reapply for a British passport change of name.

You should have changed your name when you married. Not sure who advised you not to 'to prevent confusion'.

I was going through what eneded up being an 8year battle to reinstate my ILR, which resulted in them granting DLR for 6 years (with renewal after 3yrs) and then the IRL.
Having had 2 passports lost by the HO I just didnt want to chance more complications as it would have meant having the name on my biometrics card changed too.
