Tier2 Extension

Hi everyone,
I am on a (3year) tier 2 visa that will expire beginning of January 2021( so i still have 8 months to go).
I am now offered a permanent position (in April 2020). When shall I apply for extension?. is it now that I got the permanent position. or do i have to wait until my current visa is about to expire (say 2 months before expiry). what i mean, is there a rule that states when I should apply?. Also do I need a new Certificate of sponsorship?

You have now to change sponsors.

Yes, you need an Unrestricted CoS.

I forgot to mention it is the same employer. And do i need to apply when i get it?

If it is a different SOC and job then you need a new CoS and all the relevant requirements (RLMT etc) must be met.

If it is the same SOC and job, then no need to apply for a new visa now and you can apply for an extension in the usual way before visa expiry.

Many thanks for your prompt reply. it is the same job , my salary increased though. So I guess now if am clear is I need a new certificate of sponsorship then I can apply . Am I Correct please?

it is the same job , my salary increased though. So I guess now if am clear is I need a new certificate of sponsorship then I can apply . Am I Correct please?
If it is the SAME job and the SAME SOC then you do NOT have to apply for an extension now. A salary increase simply needs to be reported on the SMS. You do NOT need a CoS until you are ready to apply for an extension shortly before your current visa expires.

Your sponsor should know all of this.
