Naturalisation(British) for Child born out of country

Post by surajdhall » Wed Dec 30, 2020 6:36 pm

Hi Experts,

My daughter aged 7 Years has got her Indefinite leave(ILR) this year March. I am a British Citizen(thru Naturalisation).
I wanted to apply for the British for her. I have below questions-

1. Does Residence requirements apply for Child under 18 Years? I mean she spent out of the country more than 450 days in 5 years period. So I am wondering if it affects her application.

2. Does she need to wait 12 months from the date she received ILR to be eligible to apply for Naturalisation?

3. It seems from January 2021 we need to use 'AN' from instead of 'MN1'. Is it correct? When I tried to fill AN form online(link below) it asks all the adult applicant questions like- Have you passed life in UK test etc and when I mention 'No', it asks if the applicant wants to apply for an exception, but no option to choose that the application is a child. This makes me think if 'AN' is the right application or not.

Please suggest.

1. No it does not.

2. No. But the other parent must also hold ilr and one parent be British or applying at the same time.

3. Not sure where you read that. It is and still is form MN1 for children. Note that children are REGISTERED as British. Only adults are naturalised.

You were probably redirected to Form AN because you searched for the wrong term.

Minors are not naturalised (which, in the UK, is reserved for adults). They are registered as British citizens, in this case (because the child was born aborad), under Section 3.1.

Thanks, everyone for clarification.
I tried various ways to get to the online application for a child but couldn't find. I could only find the below page and when I clicked 'check you can apply' link it shows guidance form, but no online form.
https://www.gov.uk/apply-citizenship-in ... r-children
Could anyone direct me to the link, please?

Thanks!
