My wife has just applied for British Citizenship has her 12 months of ILR has just passed. However, we did not realise that the referees cannot be related when we submitted the online application and paid the fee. We have not yet submitted the paper documents what include the passport photos yet. Can we add a third referee with this and a cover note to explain our error? Or should we just keep quiet and hope for the best?

I should add its the referees who are related to each other, they are not related to my wife.
