citizenship application for 18yo child w/ILR

Post by lpenhallow » Mon May 23, 2022 10:26 am

hi all -
I looked to see if this question had been asked before and didn't see it. We received ILR last June while our son was 17. Because he was under 18, he didn't need to take the life in the UK test. Now this year, we're looking at citizenship, but he's 18 now - will he have to take the test as part of his citizenship application? I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but hoping for a grandfathered clause as the poor boy is in the throes of A levels now.

thanks for any advice you have!

Yes - son needs English B1 and LITUK tests as he is now an adult .... note that A levels are not accepted ...

Yes, the LIUK test and the English B1 test.

No, there is no such clause. Anyone who is between 18 and 65 must do both tests, unless specifically medically not possible.

Note that there is no requirement for a person with ILR to apply for naturalisation. They can reside in the UK on ILR for life if they so wanted.

And there is no time limit on when they can apply for naturalisation. They can apply for naturalisation as soon as they are eligible (one year after ILR), after one year, after two years or ten, so long as, on the date of application, they meet the requirements.

The 18 year old can give the test and make the application after the A-level exams or even after the results, so long as they meet the absence, physical presence and other requirements on the date of application.
