If BC is approved, what to do if original nationality has to be renounced but foreign passport is needed?

Post by isla87 » Mon Aug 01, 2022 11:51 pm

I am considering whether to apply for BC or not, but the requirements states that the original foreign passport must be provided. My country will require me to renounce my citizenship and surrender my passport, so how would I meet the following criteria:

You have a certificate of naturalisation or registration
You’ll need both:

your naturalisation or registration certificate
the passport you used to come into the UK or the foreign passport you’re included on

Also, do all the pages of the passport have to be scanned as a part of the online application for BC? Should every page (including blank pages) be scanned and then compiled as a PDF?

Once you are approved and have become British (after the ceremony), and obtained a British passport, you can then renounce if you wish/have to.
The requirement to submit a foreign passport with the (separate) British passport application is not a statutory requirement, if you don't have one you can't provide one .... best to explain in a note to HMPO.
For naturalisation scan all page I believe.
This is just my opinion as a member of this forum and does not constitute immigration advice.

Like many people, you are confusing British Citizenship and British passport. They are NOT the same thing. See this post.

You first need to apply and be succesful in acquiring British citizenship, and only then
You can apply for a British passport.

When you apply for British citizenship, you DO NOT usually need to submit by post your original passport (just upload a scanned copy).
When you apply for your British passport, you DO usually need to submit by post your original passport and your British citizenship certificate.

Once that is clear in your mind, you apply what @alterhase58 says above.
My posts express what I believe are the facts, based on the best of my knowledge, about the topics discussed in this forum. They do not constitute immigration advice.

Thank you. However, I'm actually not confusing the two. I was asking two separate questions, one about scanning the foreign passport to apply for BC, and the other about providing the actual passport, not the scan, for the British passport.

The latter is the issue as once BC is approved, my consulate has advised that the passport must be surrendered within 90 days. So sending it off for the British passport application is a problem. What happens if I don't receive the British passport and the foreign passport back in time?
That's my concern.

Simply apply for the British passport and surrender your foreign passport once the British one is received. Many have done this and there is no issue.
