Uk Dual Citizenship

Post by Jenny Abidi » Tue Oct 25, 2022 3:33 pm

Hi Forum,

My husband has recently been granted citizenship in the UK so he now has a UK passport and Tunisian Passport.

He will be travelling to Algeria in February. I contacted the Algerian Consulate to ask if he would need a visa to travel to Algeria, they stated that Tunisian Nationals do not require visas. This is what their website says:

"All non-Algerians need to apply for a visa to enter Algeria. There are exceptions for some nationals of foreign countries, listed below, who are exempted from visas:

All Nationals from :Libya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Seychelles, Tunisia.

The Consulate General of Algeria in London will process visa applications made by applicants residing in the UK only. Others foreign citizens must provide "proof of residency in the UK". Regardless of their age, kids traveling with their parents need a visa.

British passport holders residing abroad must apply for their visa to Algeria at the Algerian Embassy or Consulate accredited in the country of their actual residence."

Does anyone know how this would work when travelling? Which passport would he need to take or would he need both? Or would he need a visa?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Jenny

Take both passports.

Depart on British passport. Enter Algeria on Tunisian passport.

On return, exit Algeria on Tunisian passport and enter the UK on British passport.

OP wouldn't be able to depart on British passport as it has no visa. OP needs to depart on Tunisian passport and enter Algeria with same.

When departing Algeria, he departs on British Passport but might be required to show Tunisian passport. So effectively show both when departing and enter the UK on British P.

Present the Tunisian passport as proof of right to enter Algeria.

Works the same for us who are South African. Exit and enter the UK on British passports, but presenting SA passport on departure from UK and presenting UK passport in SA on departure

very interesting..so the landing and exit stamp need not be on the same passport?

In this case, when you land in SA, the landing stamp would be on SA passport, but when you exit you would present the British passport, so wouldn't the immigration officer question where your stamp on entry?

I guess it is legal for SA / UK..not sure if it is same for every country..it may well be and it is ok for individuals to have multiple passports from multiple countries...(I previously thought it is only reserved for ppl like Jason Bourne..:)- )

The important bits are if you have the right to enter the country A and if you have the right to depart to the country B from country A.
Entry and departure stamps are just a way to engrave when you arrived a country and when you left to make sure you haven't overstayed. It doesn't matter if you have a right of residency in the country of a citizen of the country you're entering or departing.
