First child British Passport

Post by madhun » Fri Oct 28, 2022 5:23 am

Hello Moderators.

Hope everyone doing good? I have one query regarding applying my child (10y) first British passport.

My Child was born outside UK and we just got MN1 approval and also father naturalisation approval.
While citizenship applications were in process we travelled abroad due to family emergency and stuck in abroad.

Now my queries are

Can I apply my child first British passport either normal or emergency passport when my child is not in UK? or do I need to wait until my child return to UK?

Appreciate your suggestions regarding this.
Thanks & Regards,
Madhu

My first instinct would be "no". When you applied, you expressed that the future of your child is to live in the UK long term. If you apply for their first passport from abroad, this could be viewed as clashing with the future intention question. It has been an issue for people on this forum before, though I am not aware if the HO is similarly strict for adults and children alike.
All advice comes from personal research and experience and should not be regarded as professional opinion.

Thank you @contorted_svy for your reply. I will wait until my child return to UK to apply passport.

Apologies for asking again, just had a quick look at my citizenship application copy and we had expressed that we live in UK long term for adult application only not for kids MN1, so this will applicable only for adults not kids I guess. Those who have done the process successfully from abroad, can you please provide your feedback

Do you have the child's British registration certificate with you to apply for a passport?

Why can the child not return to the UK on the foreign passport and ILR?

Thanks CR001 for the response. Yes we received my child's registration certificate by post, I assume by default ILR BRP become invalid, so I am thinking to apply kids passport from India.

Myself I have contacted my council to postpone my citizenship ceremony and they agreed, now I am planning to travel to UK alone and bring my child's registration certificate and then apply child's passport from India. Kindly advise.

Simply return to the UK with the child and apply for a passport. There will be no issue with entering the UK with the ILR BRP and if asked, simply state the child was approved for citizenship while abroad and you are returning.

A passport from abroad can take 16 weeks to a year.

You are overthinking.

Thanks CR001, As we stuck in India due to family emergency and it will take another 4 to 5 weeks to travel back to UK. So I am checking option to apply for my child first passport from outside UK.

Technically, you are correct. However, CR001’s advice is practical. It may take at least 23 weeks for a child’s first British passport from India.

If child’s ILR hasn’t expired, then the Stupid will probably allow child to travel to the UK. Then apply for a British passport when child is back in the UK.
