First British passport for UK born baby

Post by rsh08 » Thu Jul 20, 2023 11:11 pm

Hi,
Hope to get a confirmation from the forum on query regarding British passport for newborn baby in UK.

Here's the details:
Baby was born in UK in Mar 2023
Baby has birth certificate of UK
Parents were on Tier 2 General visa when Baby was born.
Both parents are on Tier 2 General and proceeding to apply for ILR in Aug 23.

Questions:
1. Can Baby apply for British passport directly once parents' ILR is completed?
4. Or, do baby need first British naturalization before applying for first British passport?

Looking forward to hearing from experts and anyone who has gone through similar situation recently.

Thanks in advance.

1. No. The baby is not British. Only a British citizen can apply for a British passport.

2. Yes,you have to apply to register the child as British on form MN1 once either parent has been granted ilr. Once approved and you receive the certificate, only then can you apply for a British passport.
