British passport for baby born outside of the UK

Post by Wayfarer777 » Wed Nov 08, 2023 8:25 pm

Hello everyone.

I would like to apply for British passport for my new born baby.

Just to give a bit of background of myself - I am British Citizen by naturalisation, and my wife is Indian. We now have a baby born in India. Both my wife and baby are currently in India. I am planning to bring them both to the UK. I understand that my baby can be considered as British citizen by descent as I am a British citizen at the time of my baby's birth. I also need to apply spouse visa for my wife. I am currently confused which application I need to start applying first.

Can someone guide me the best approach to apply visas both for my baby and wife. Should I apply British passport for my baby first and then apply spouse visa for my wife? If so, which application form should I use for my baby?

Many thanks.

Your questions are separate processes and independent of each other.

I have moved your British passport topic to the British citizenship sub forum as these questions are not relevant to the Immigration for Family sub forum.

Passports from India can take between 16 weeks and 12 months. If your child has an Indian passport, you can also apply for a Certificate of Entitlement to the Right of Abode for the child and then once in the UK, apply for a British passport.

Plan the spouse visa accordingly.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. I haven't applied for Indian passport for my baby yet as I am fully aware that my baby can be eligible to apply for British passport by descent.

Can you please send me the link on how to apply passport for my baby from India?

Thanks.

Considering long timelines for getting passport from India for my baby, I am thinking to apply for indian passport and then apply for CoE-RoA which I believe takes less time. Once my baby in UK, I can then apply for british passport.

Just one question here. If my baby gets RoA on Indian passort, does my baby needs to travel to the UK immediately to collect any BRP card? because the reason I am asking is, My baby needs to wait until my wife gets spouse visa so that they can both travel to the UK together.

Thanks.

There is no brp card if you do a CoA application.

It is a vignette in the passport and expires when the passport does.
