UK Home Office Baiting Us?

Serious question.

My husband who is Palestinian received an email from the address: home.office.atlas@notifications.service.gov.uk

We are midway through his UK citizenship being hopefully assessed and accepted, but this email just doesn't sit right with me.

First there is the misspelling of 'confirmation' as 'conformation' twice in what is meant to be an official government email.

Then the more pertinent part:

He was born in Jerusalem, and this email specifically changes what we said on the application to 'Jerusalem, Israel' rather than Jerusalem, Occupied Palestine, and is asking us if this is correct. This has never been corrected in our previous three spouse/ILR applications.

If we don't correct them now, then they have actively made the application incorrect by changing place of birth to Jerusalem, Israel. However, if we correct them to say Palestine I feel like there may very well be a person with a biased opinion at the other end of the email, who may in turn say we are incorrect.

What would you do? Would you correct them or accept the change to Israel for the sake of application, so that we can just move on? Feels like we're treading along a thin tightrope right now...

From what I have found online the email address seems genuine. If there was a suspicion of bias on the caseworker's part it would be a very serious offence, so if the correct place of birth (which I imagine is reported on the applicant's passport) is 'Jerusalem, Occupied Palestine' then I would attempt to correct it. Other members may offer further advice.

Ukvi use the current demographics. So in current geographic location, Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.

Many members have posted the same question about the previous USSR countries and a handful of other countries where over the years, changes havr occurred.

This has nothing to do with bias, but the current actual state of gerogrpahical locations and names.

The email address used is a regular one reported by members.

Note this is what will be shown on your certificate.

Next step after that will be the passport to be obtained which will only show "Jerusalem" as place of birth (no country).
You don't have to carry the certificate if you are concerned.

There are people whose grandparents were born in certain villages in western part of Bangladesh.

These villages were part of India, then Pakistan and now Bangladesh. Anyone born there will mention the village of birth but the country mentioned will depend on whose territory it was at date of application.

Just recently, India and Bangladesh in 2015 swapped around 160 enclaves which resulted in approximately 52k people's "country" being changed overnight.

So we can see such scenarios happen mot just in conflict (Israel/Palestine, Balkans) or breakup of a country (USSR, Yugoslavia, India/Pak) but in peace times as well.
