Spouse on Ancestry visa

Ancestry visa as a dependent - help on when to apply

Hello! Hoping someone can help me. I saw on the visa sites you can’t apply more than 3 months before travel. We are wanting to move to London and start work at the end of September after 2 months of travel. Ideally we apply for the visa now (5 months ahead) so we have it to show to employers when going for Jobs. I don’t care about losing the 2 months on the visa unused but not sure how it works if you have to “action” it at a certain time. Thanks for your help!

If a visa is approved, you'll get a 90 day visa to use for travel; you then get a BRP (I assume) to provide your permanent status. It might be a bit of a gamble and if you don't make it, you'd have to do a vignette transfer.

As BRP cards are being phased out, your visa in your passport will likely be valid for the full 5 years.

Your visa is 'activated' on arrival where your visa in your passport will be stamped (you should not use the e-gates on first arrival with your visa).

Any absence between date of issue and entry to the UK is counted towards your absence limit of 180 days in any rolling 12 month period.

Note that you will also have to state an anticipated date of arrival in the UK in the form and if this is more than 3 months in advance, it won't be issued according to your plans.

Plan accordingly.

You can simply inform employers that you are applying for an Ancestry visa and don't need sponsorship. Honestly though, it is a tough job market (depending where you plan on being in the UK), while there are a lot of jobs, there are a lot of job applicants.
