Applying for British Citizenship - 17 Yrs old Child ILR

Post by chelam » Tue Dec 03, 2024 8:04 pm

Dear Sir/Madam,

My wife recently got a British passport. Me and my two children have got ILR on Nov 2024 through 5 year PBS dependent route. By going through the topics, I understand that we 3 (Me and my children) will be eligible to apply for British citizenship immediately now as my wife is a British citizen. One point to note is that my first child is 17yrs now and she will turn 18 next year Aug month.
- Is this right that before she turns 18, we will be able to apply for British citizenship immediately (acquired ILR now)?

Otherwise,

If she turns 18 next year August, then I will need to wait until Nov 2025 to complete one year in ILR before she apply for British Citizenship?

If daughter turns 18 next August SHE would have to wait 12 months on ILR, NOT you.
She will be an adult then and applying in her own right.

You are all eligible to apply. Best to prioritise eldest daughter's application as it will become more expensive and she will have to take the tests once she turns 18.
All advice comes from personal research and experience and should not be regarded as professional opinion.

To apply British citizenship for minor

Post by chelam » Sun Aug 10, 2025 2:04 pm

Dear All,

My wife is a British citizen, received through Naturalization. I and my two children (are minor) hold ILR received through PBS dependent 5 year route. I am trying to apply for British Citizenship for my two children aged 14, 17. I understood that they are eligible to apply now, but got confused which form to use to apply.

Should I need to use 'Citizenship through registration for Minors' rather than naturalisation? Is it online form MN1?

Can you please post a link?

When does your older child turn 18? You stated in December 2024 that they turn 18 in August.

Why have you waited till now instead of applying when you previously asked, as you were advised, specifically for the older child??

Yes, she will turn 18 in Aug end. I had family bereavement and hence couldn't initiate it immediately.
Now, I am filling up the application.

I have one query in the application. It asks for
'Provide details of your grandparent from whom your mother or father derived British citizenship by descent.'

Should I skip the question?

That question is NOT relevant to children registering for citizenship ship if they have ilr.

The route option for their citize ship must be chosen as "Other" not any of the other options, ie British parent option.

Thank you, I think, I chose the wrong option. In the below, Do you suggest to select the last one? (Other - apply at the discretion of the HOme Secretary)?

Question:- Choose which category to apply under. You are a child under 18 and:

You were born in the UK

You were born outside the UK

Your parent is British by descent and lived in the UK or a British Overseas territory for at least 3 years before you were born

Your parent is British by descent and you and your parents (unless they are legally separated) are now living in the UK or a British Overseas territory

You were born on or after 13 January 2010 and your parent was serving in the UK armed forces

You were adopted abroad by British citizen parents

You were born before 1 July 2006 to a British father and your parents were not married

One or both of your parents is applying for British citizenship

Other - apply at the discretion of the Home Secretary

'Other' is the ONLY option applicable to your children born abroad.
